School Safety

Assistant Superintendent ~ Dr. Lee McDade

The Deputy Superintendent of Administrative Services oversees issues pertaining to school safety including acting as a liaison for School Resource Officers (with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office), updating school safety plans, oversight of the system's emergency disaster plans, evacuation plans in the event of a nuclear emergency and acting as liaison with emergency management services.

All schools must conduct at least one full evacuation fire drill each month during the school year, with an additional fire drill to be conducted within the first 30 days of school per Tennessee Code Annotated 68-102-137(b). A record of all fire drills, including the time and date, shall be kept in the respective school and shall be made available upon request to the fire marshal for inspection and review. Schools within the Chattanooga city limits must conduct two fire evacuation drills per month each month of the school year per Chattanooga City Code Sec. 17-34.

Tennessee Code Annotated 68-102-137(f) also directs that each principal conduct at least three (3) safety drills not requiring full evacuation of all persons from their building(s) during the school year. The minimum of the three safety drills can include a combination of a tornado drill, intruder drill (lockdown), earthquake drill, or shelter in place drill.

Additionally, schools within a certain radius of the Sequoyah Nuclear Plant have designated evacuation sites in the event of an emergency.
