The Benwood Initiative is a collaboration between the Hamilton County Department of Education, Public Education Foundation and Benwood Foundation to improve reading and math at the lowest achieving elementary schools in the district.

Phase One of the Benwood Initiative, launched in January of 2001, captured national attention for its success in improving student achievement in eight urban elementary schools.  In 2007, the Benwood Foundation expanded the initiative to another eight schools, focused on improving literacy and math scores across Hamilton County. The second phase seeks to take the initiative "to scale" spreading it to all elementary classrooms in the county.
