Student Discipline

Assistant Superintendent ~ Dr. Lee McDade

All students and parents sign the Code of Acceptable Behavior each year during registration. This code outlines the board policy on punishment for unacceptable behavior as well as terms of suspensions and Zero Tolerance expulsions.

Principals have authority to suspend students for up to 20 school days. These suspensions can be appealed at the school level (through the principal) and will be heard by a panel of principals (Level I hearing). A level I hearing decision can be appealed to the Deputy Superintendent of Administrative Services who can uphold the Level I decision or change it. Options include reducing the suspension, increasing it or sending the student to Washington Alternative for a specific amount of time.

Zero Tolerance expulsions (typically for one calendar year from date of offense) can be appealed to the Central Office.

The Deputy Superintendent of Administrative Services hears all appeals to Zero Tolerance offenses. Students who have been suspended for a Zero Tolerance Offense (assaulting a teacher, weapons, drug paraphernalia) must contact this office to schedule an appeal. Expulsions from school for a Zero Tolerance offense that is not appealed will remain in effect for one calendar year.
