Chattanooga Student Named to International Science Olympiad

Sale Creek takes top honors at science fair

 

Chattanooga, TN  --  A Sale Creek student has been chosen to represent Chattanooga in a global science fair this May.

At the Chattanooga Regional Science and Engineering Fair in March, Samantha Wilkinson, a student at Sale Creek High School, received an invitation to compete in the International Science Olympiad.  She will travel to Houston, Texas to represent Hamilton County and the Southeast and compete against participants from over 70 countries.

In addition, Wilkinson and other Sale Creek students won a total of 13 division and specialty awards.

Division Awards:

  • Physics and Astronomy (1st Place) --- Chassie Harris
  • Biochemistry (1st Place) --- Amber Rose Gardner
  • Environmental Management (1st Place) --- Samantha Wilkinson
  • Plant Sciences (1st Place) --- Samuel Morgan
  • Engineering-Electrical & Mechanical (2nd Place) --- Katie Newsom
  • Medicine & Health Sciences (Honorable Mention) --- Lorena Wance

Specialty Awards:

  • Overall Grand Prize (3rd Place) --- Amber Rose Gardner
  • The Navy Award --- Jared Fuller
  • The Army Specialty Award --- Chassie Harris
  • The Army Specialty Award --- Samantha Wilkinson
  • The Reflection Riding Award --- Samuel Morgan
  • The Army Specialty Award --- Amber Rose Gardner
  • UTC Scholarship Award (1st Place) --- Amber Rose Gardner

This Spring Sale Creek students were encouraged to participate in the regional fair by sponsor Tom Gardner, who guided their project development and progress.  Gardner believes that doing these projects helps students transition into college-level work and ultimately prepares them for a more successful future.

All projects from Hamilton County students were showcased during the Science Fair held at UTC.  Participants ranged from sixth graders to high school seniors.
