Unum hands out $44,000 in classroom mini grants

Unum handed out more than $44,000 in checks to 56 teachers from around Hamilton County Tuesday at its third annual Strong Schools Grant recognition luncheon.
The grants, which were eligible for classroom projects up to $1000 each, ranged in scope from a recycling project at Brown Academyt to a Science and History lesson at Normal Park Upper and Hands on History at Red Bank High School. In all, 51 projects from 32 schools were funded through the annual program.
The Strong Schools Grant is just one of several ways Unum supports education in Hamilton County. The global insurance giant also partners with the district on:
- Principals Leadership Academy (supporting the academy for aspiring principals with fund
- Technology Grants (matching grants for Promethean Boards for schools)
- Middle School Mentoring (Big Brothers/Big Sisters at Dalewood and Orchard Knob Middle School)
- Community Day (volunteering close to 300 people to makeover schools in June. Projects to date include Spring Creek and Ooltewah Elementary.)
- Starting 9 (recognizing 9 teachers from various levels and areas for excellence in the classroom)
