The Benwood Foundation
In 2000, the Benwood Foundation contributed $5 million, matched with $2.5 million
from PEF, to improve literacy and teacher effectiveness in Hamilton County’s eight
most challenged elementary schools. The initiative was enhanced when the Osborne
Foundation committed $2.5 million to create the Osborne Fellows Initiative – a free
literacy-related master’s degree to 50 Benwood school teachers. By focusing on quality
teachers and providing them with the training they needed, the schools made dramatic
strides in their literacy levels, improving 3rd grade reading proficiency in each
year, including a jump of eleven percentage points in the fifth year.
Committed to the principle that all children can be successful learners, Benwood
is currently planning how best to expand the initiative to reach more of Hamilton
County’s elementary students and drive literacy to new levels.
