At its July, 2001 meeting, the Hamilton County Board of Education voted to add a
student member to its ranks. This action demonstrated the Board’s continuing commitment
to acknowledging the student voice in each of its policymaking decisions.
The Student Member of the Board of Education was appointed after a yearlong process
of discussion and planning. The leadership of the
Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC)
generated the idea in conjunction with the positive student-based reforms of the
Carnegie initiative. Their plan was offered as a motion by Board member Marty Puryear,
amended by Board Vice-Chairman Joe Conner, and approved without a single negative
vote.
The Student Member will change each year with the leadership of the SSAC. The Chairman
of the SSAC will be invited to serve, but may designate another member of the Council
if he or she sees fit.
The Student Member will officially represent every Hamilton County student on issues
that come before the Board of Education. He or she will work closely with the members
of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council to represent student interests.
Hamilton County high school students with questions, comments, or concerns should
contact their representative to the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council for
assistance. Then, concerns will be directed to the Student Member.
Hamilton County elementary and middle school students with questions, comments,
or concerns should contact the Student Member directly, as they are not represented
on the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council.
For the 2007-2008 academic year, Rudy Foster will serve both as Chairman of the
Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council, and as Student Member of the Board of
Education.
More information about Rudy and the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council can
be obtained at the SSAC website.
