Exceptional Education
Hamilton
County Schools offers a full continuum of Exceptional Education services for eligible
students including access to general education, small group instruction, special
classes, vocational training, enrichment classes and homebound schooling. These
students must be deemed eligible for such services by a specific team of professionals,
with input by parents and sometimes students. Services are outlined by these teams
in Individualized Educational Programs (IEP) in keeping with federal, state and
local laws, regulations, procedures and policies.
Most Exceptional Education services are available in a student’s home school, with
more specialized services being offered at centers located throughout the county.
The underlying philosophy of Exceptional Education is that students with disabilities
receive specialized programming in the least restrictive environment to the maximum
extent appropriate.
In many settings, students are served through a collaborative team model. Teams
of professionals incorporate inclusion services as well as instruction outside regular
classes for those students whose team members determine such assistance is needed
for success.
Encouragement of co-teaching and collaboration among all professionals involved
with individual students and professional partnerships offers students additional
opportunities to interact in the general education setting while maintaining individualized
educational progress.
This model of service ensures that all students achieve reasonable academic gain
through teaching to individual learning styles and educational needs by employing
multi-level instruction, cooperative learning, activity-based learning, mastery
learning and technological interventions along with peer support and tutoring.
