Eligibility for Vision Services
The State of Tennessee Department of Education is making every
effort to identify and provide special education services to children across Tennessee
who have visual impairments which affect their ability to perform efficiently in
the classroom.

According to the Tennessee Rules, Regulations and Minimum Standards, a child must
have one of the following characteristics to be eligible to receive special services
which would allow a teacher of the visually impaired to work with him/her:

- Distant visual acuity of 20/50 or less, in the better eye after correction.
- A near visual acuity of 20/50 or less, in the better eye after correction
(i.e.:
Jaegar 6 or AMA 14/35 are equivalent to 20/50).
- A central visual field loss of any degree in both eyes.
- A remaining peripheral visual field no greater than 60 degrees.

- An ocular disorder associated with structural defects, as cataracts, strabismus, or detached retina.
- An ocular disorder associated with a disease as diabetes, rubella, or albinism.
- A progressive loss-of-sight, which may in the future, affect ability to learn visually.
