Students Taking A Right Stand (STARS) Chattanooga
(made available through S&DFSC)
Snapshot
- STARS is a school-based non-profit organization appointed as the Safe and Drug Free program serving the Hamilton County Department of Education.
- STARS’ mission is to encourage students to make healthy choices and refrain from the use of alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, and violence.
- Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is available to enhance school climates for both elementary and middle schools. Initial training involves a core team of school staff members that will plan training for the entire staff to benefit the school at large.
- Programming at the upper elementary level includes a seven-session curriculum training of Hazelden’s “No Bullying”, Peaceable Schools Conflict Resolution, and/or Botvin’s LifeSkills Training. One session in each curriculum is devoted to drug education.
- Programming at the secondary level includes student training in Peers Making Peace Peer Mediation; Mendez “Too Good” Program; CDC Media Literacy; alcohol, tobacco, prescription drug abuse, and other drug resistance education; leadership development with service learning; and an annual youth conference.
- An alternative to full suspension is provided for students suspended for alcohol and/or tobacco-related offenses.
- Small group support service is provided to students struggling with personal challenges such as grief, anger management, etc.
Administrators, teachers and students in each school evaluate the program in yearly surveys and interviews. SASI data is used to collect data relevant to attendance, grades, and disciplinary referrals. Based on the outcomes of this data, STARS is able to evaluate behavioral and knowledge changes. Because school personnel own the STARS program in their schools, the program is adapted to meet their specific needs.
