Today’s #HCSHeroes Spotlight is Hillery Davis, a kindergarten teacher at Harrison Elementary. Ms. Davis, who is in her tenth year with Hamilton County Schools, was nominated by a parent for making a difference for her child during a difficult school year.

“[Ms. Davis] deserves the #HCSHero for all the hard work she puts in,” said Blanca Howarth, a Harrison Elementary. “My child loves her teacher.”

Despite the challenges this school year has presented, Ms. Davis continues to operate with grace in her classroom, and has found the unusual circumstances to be an unexpected learning opportunity for her students.

“This has been an excellent opportunity to teach even my kindergarteners that even when things seem to be challenging, a growth mindset and trying your best can help you overcome anything you set your mind to doing,” said Ms. Davis. “I have tried very hard to show empathy to students, parents, and coworkers during these challenging times. Sometimes, it is giving a listening ear and sometimes it is modeling perseverance on how to overcome challenges.”

Teaching important lessons like these is why Ms. Davis loves being a teacher. “My favorite part of my job is teaching the rigorous academic standards and teaching the students how to believe in themselves to rise to the challenge. I love the moment when they gain their confidence and inform me ‘their brain is growing!’”

The efforts of our teachers and staff are truly heroic, and we are proud to have people like Ms. Davis on our team to support our students!
