Summer Learning Challenge:
500,000 Hours of Learning

HCS Learning Challenge Graphic

Keeping children engaged in learning during the summer months is essential to preventing learning loss. We want to ensure our students are ready to hit the ground running when they return to school on August 12, so we’re launching the HCS Summer Learning Challenge to avoid the “Summer Slide.”

We’re challenging students in Hamilton County Schools to collectively spend 500,000 hours this summer engaging in some kind of learning activity. Educating our children is a collaborative effort by our community, and we are fortunate to have the support of the Children’s Cabinet, which brings together government agencies and child-serving community organizations, to help us accomplish this ambitious goal. The HCS Summer Learning Challenge will be an unprecedented community-wide effort, and we’re confident our students will rise to the challenge.

What Counts As Summer Learning?

  • Summer School - This month, Hamilton County Schools is launching select summer school programs across the county. The district will track learning hours earned by these students.

  • Summer Programs - Through partnership with Chattanooga 2.0, out-of-school providers in our community will track hours earned by students in their summer programs.

  • 20/20/20 - The district’s 20/20/20 campaign encourages students to spend 20 minutes per day on iReady math activities, iReady ELA activities, and reading their favorite books. These hours will be included.

  • At-Home Learning Activities - Did your child create a science experiment with items they found at home? Did your family learn how to cook a new recipe? That counts! Learning takes many different forms and as long as your child is stimulating their mind and engaging in something new, their time counts toward the HCS Summer Learning Challenge goal.

Do I Need to Track My Hours?

The district will track learning hours through summer school, summer programs, and iReady activities. Families will need to submit their hours for reading and other at-home learning activities.

You Can Win Prizes!

We want our students' summer reading hours to be strong, so we're offering prizes! For every five hours of reading you track per week, you will receive one entry to win a gift card. The more you read, the greater your chances are for winning. We will do gift card drawings each week in July and notify the winning students by email. Don't forget to track your reading time below!
