Hixson High’s Air Force JROTC earns historic awards
The Hixson High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) accomplished a first in the Unit’s 46-year history! Headquarters Air Force JROTC recently announced the unit as a recipient of both the Air Force JROTC Distinguished Unit with Merit Award and the Silver Star Community Service with Excellence Award for the academic year 2018-2019.

School Nurse Appreciation Week
Since 1972, National School Nurse Week has been celebrated to show our school nurses how much they mean to the success of our schools and our children. May 6-12, 2019 is National School Nurse Week. The week is celebrated annually in May in honor of the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

Groundbreaking begins work on new Harrison Elementary
The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Harrison Elementary School was held on Friday, May 10 at 1 p.m. on the new school property on Highway 58 across from the existing school. The school entrance will be on Ferdinand Piech Way.

McConnell Elementary teacher selected for Tennessee Educator Fellowship
Caroline Souza, a third-grade teacher at McConnell Elementary School, is one of thirty-one fellows selected for the 2019-20 Tennessee Educator Fellowship class. She has been teaching for six years.

Ooltewah High band also participating in Manilow Project online contest
The Ooltewah High’s band has joined Lookout Valley Middle High band on the leaderboard for the Manilow Music Project (MMP) contest for 2019. If one of the bands can win the contest, the winner will get $100,000 to spend on new instruments and uniforms. The bands need your vote for their video entry to top the current leaders and win the competition.

Lookout Valley needs your online vote to win Manilow Project contest
The Lookout Valley Middle High band is on the leaderboard for the Manilow Music Project (MMP) contest for 2019. If the band can win the contest, the group stands to win $100,000 worth of instruments and uniforms. The band needs your vote for their video entry to top the current leaders and win the competition.

Center for Creative Arts senior a 2019 U.S. Presidential Scholar
Zavier Chavez, a senior at the Chattanooga High School Center for Creative Arts (CCA), was announced today as one of 161 high school seniors in the 55th class of U.S. Presidential Scholars. U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos made the announcement. The seniors earned the recognition for their accomplishments in academics, the arts and career, and technical education. Chavez was one of only two selected from Tennessee.

Focus Five Performance Targets

The district will pursue five overarching performance targets to measure our success at the end of the Future Ready 2023! five-year time-frame. These are: Reading Language Arts (RLA) 3rd grade - 50% proficiency by 2023, Algebra 1- double proficiency by 2023, Early post-secondary course or earned an industry credentials (EPSOs) - 75%, ACT- 21 by 2023, Graduation rates- 90% by 2023
