Hamilton County Schools is celebrating Reggie Jackson during Teacher Appreciation Week for his outstanding contributions to Brainerd High School. A proud alum from the class of 2003, Jackson has returned to his roots as a first-year teacher, instructing Physical Education (PE), Wellness, and coaching basketball.
Jackson's passion for teaching stems from his own experiences as a student. "Having influential PE teachers growing up always led me to have a passion for it. I've always been waiting for the right opportunity," Jackson shared. His opportunity came full circle when he joined Brainerd High School, where Assistant Principal Talley Caldwell, his former middle school PE teacher, warmly welcomed him.
In his teaching style, Jackson emphasizes student engagement and leadership. He encourages students to lead discussions and share their ideas during wellness sessions on 'A' days, while on 'B' days, he focuses on engaging students in physical education activities in the gym. Jackson cherishes the "lightbulb moments" when students grasp new concepts or skills.
This week, Jackson was touched by letters from his students expressing gratitude for his kindness and the welcoming atmosphere he fosters. These gestures highlight the meaningful connections he has made in a short time. Beyond his classrooms and the gym, Jackson has established relationships with fellow teachers and benefits from the guidance of his mentor, Ms. Reed, who helps navigate the challenges of being a new teacher. "Being in his first year teaching, there's a lot to learn, and he is both a coach and teacher. This past year he has been so positive and eager to grow, while also encouraging both students and teachers around him," Reed remarked.
Looking ahead, Jackson is dedicated to reaching and assisting as many students as possible. His return to Brainerd High School symbolizes a promising future, bringing inspiration and opportunities to the students and community he supports.
