August 13, 2024- Meet Kari Mays, an Algebra 1 and Film Studies teacher at East Ridge High School, who recently became one of the 2024-25 Tennessee Ten Novice Teachers of the Year.
When asked why they nominated Mays, Erin Kirby, Induction Coordinator and Nicole Galletta, Missionary Ridge New Teacher Coach, said, “Kari Mays utilizes interdisciplinary strategies to engage her students and complements the curriculum she teaches with authentic, real-life experiences. Kari recognizes the need to forge a deeper connection with high school students and their families. The intentionality in her teacher practice is quite remarkable.
Her journey into teaching was unconventional, as she explored alternative pathways when her college didn't offer her preferred degree. This led her to Project Inspire, a teacher residency program aimed at transforming education in underserved communities. Included in the program is a year of residency, which she did at her current school. She has taught several classes, including contemporary issues, pre-calculus, and applied math. Mays quickly embraced the hurdles of being a new educator, sifting through all of the advice she was given upon entering a new school, mastering the curriculum, and adapting teaching methods to cater to each student’s diverse learning style. Her resilience and dedication propelled her to become one of the top ten novice teachers in the entire state of Tennessee.
As a woman excelling in the STEM field, Mays takes pride in inspiring young girls in her class to explore math and consider pursuing careers in STEM. She values empathy, care, and confidence as crucial qualities for educators and finds joy in teaching energetic ninth-grade students with a strong passion for learning.
Beyond math, Mays emphasizes the importance of collaboration and real-life skills, ensuring that her students learn how to work effectively with others. She supports the commitment that every student belongs by fostering a sense of community through initiatives like the drama club, where students find acceptance and support. Mays states one of her guiding principles in her work, “I want every one of my students to know they belong and there is a place for them in this world and in my classroom.” East Ridge High School leadership and staff back her efforts by continuing to establish more clubs, providing students with the chance to engage in activities they find intriguing, and ensuring their voices are heard.
Hamilton County Schools appreciates educators like Mays, who consistently strive to support students and communities. Mays' commitment to inclusivity and student connection is applauded, and her contributions are cherished by her school community. Thank you, Ms. Mays, for your steadfast service and influence on our students.
