The students of Lookout Valley Middle High School’s (LVMHS) band received an exciting surprise Wednesday when they were informed about a generous $30,000 donation for new band uniforms. The band’s current uniforms were donated by Hixson High School several years ago because the two schools share the same school colors. LVMHS hasn’t been able to buy new uniforms since the 1980s.
The band has been referenced as “Hand Me Down Hixson.” Band Director Shannon Stephens said some instruments even date back to the 1930s. Inspired to help, an individual reached out on behalf of the band to Local 3 to pick up the story to help raise awareness of the band raising money.
Local philanthropist Lisa Frost was watching the news with her husband when the band’s story aired. Moved by the heartfelt story, Lisa turned to her husband and asked, “What do you think?” His response was immediate, “Let’s do it.” With that, the Frost Foundation decided to take action and make the student’s dreams a reality.
Lisa and her daughter, Amy Haddock, arranged to visit the school and personally deliver the donation, which would cover the costs of new uniforms for each member of the Lookout Valley band.
On the day of the big reveal, the band was gathered in the music room, unaware of the life-changing surprise. Band director Stephens had been working alongside students and families to raise funds for new uniforms, and while the goal seemed daunting, they continued to press on with hope. Once the surprise was revealed, the students erupted in applause, clapping and cheering as they realized the profound impact of Lisa’s kindness.
Stephens, who is usually the one inspiring her students to reach for the stars, was overcome with emotion. With tears in her eyes, she thanked Lisa and the foundation. “Your generosity will not only give our students the pride of wearing beautiful new uniforms but also show them the incredible impact that one person’s kindness can have on an entire community.”
Lisa Frost, along with her daughter Amy, shared how gratifying it was for them to help. “We look for opportunities to help local people when we can. These kids are so talented and polite. Each of them introduced themselves to us and told us what grade they are in and how much longer they would be a part of the band program. Our family has been blessed, and we want to be a blessing to them.”
A special thank you to all who donated to the Lookout Valley Middle High School Band Program. The students will get their new uniforms soon, and the additional money will be used to update some old instruments.
