Student Spotlight: Owiin Merritt

Chattanooga, TN– Owiin Merritt, an 11th grader at Chattanooga High School Center for Creative Arts (CCA), embodies dedication, passion, and a profound appreciation for the arts. Starting ballet at three years old, Merritt has become an impressive dancer– one of CCA's first students to receive a professional role with Chattanooga Ballet.

Since joining CCA, Merritt's love for dance has only deepened. While he has a special affinity for classical ballet, he enjoys a wide range of dance styles, including jazz, modern, contemporary, and hip-hop. "When I was younger, I didn't fully understand why I liked dance so much—it was just fun to jump around. But now, it really is like magic in my eyes," he said. "There are so many things you can do that people might not think are possible. That's why I love ballet—there's a lot of really difficult, technical things you have to practice to make it look good." The discipline and commitment required for ballet make it particularly meaningful to Merritt. Though his main love is ballet, he enjoys exploring other dance genres. He believes the skills he gains in one style enrich his overall dancing, making him a more versatile performer.

CCA has played a significant role in shaping Merritt's educational and career aspirations. "I want to pursue dance professionally, but I'm also focused on my grades," he said. "I want to be successful and also be able to do the art I love." CCA has equipped him with valuable skills, including time management, determination, collaboration, and stress management. Merritt credits the school for helping him overcome his nerves. "At first, whenever I would go on stage, I would get butterflies or get anxious. This school taught me to really enjoy my art. They've given me the opportunity to do what I love as much as possible." he said. Merritt has developed techniques to conquer those nerves, such as shaking out his limbs, taking deep breaths, and getting into character before he steps on stage.

"I'm very thankful to go to this school," Merritt said. "If I didn't, I could still find opportunities, but there are so many open doors here. Dance is just one department at this school—we have visual arts, acting, musical theatre, piano, and many other things here that are unique and you may not find anywhere else." The school's welcoming environment, filled with staff and students who share a deep appreciation for the arts, fosters a sense of community and support. Merritt's ballet teacher, Christina Baker, is one of the many staff members who has been instrumental in his growth. "She's very supportive," Merritt says. "She doesn't critique us in a negative way but in a way that will help us. She's one of the people that pushed me to continue with ballet."

Beyond ballet, Merritt cherishes his friendships with peers of diverse talents, some of whom pursue multiple artistic disciplines. They share and inspire each other's work, fostering a collaborative atmosphere. Merritt has developed a strong appreciation for music, which he believes "enhances dance so much" and forms a "beautiful collaboration." One of his favorite ballets, Don Quixote, stands out to him not only for its choreography but also for its stunning music. "I love the music in it. It's really beautiful."

Merritt's passion for dance extends beyond his own performances; he also loves watching others dance. Whether it's professionals with the Chattanooga Ballet or his classmates, he finds supporting fellow dancers entertaining and valuable. Looking ahead, Merritt is excited about the upcoming shows at CCA, including dance, acting, visual arts, vocal performances, and more. With the incredible talent surrounding him, he is eager to explore new artistic areas and continue supporting others in their creative journeys.

Owiin Merritt's dedication to both his craft and his education shows that with passion and hard work, great things are possible. As he continues to grow as a dancer and artist, he is excited for the future and the many opportunities ahead. With the support of his teachers and classmates at CCA, Merritt is well on his way to achieving his dreams in dance and beyond.
