Today’s #HCSHeroes spotlight is Cassidy Pendergraph, a kindergarten teacher at Apison Elementary. Although she is new to teaching, Ms. Pendergraph has gone above and beyond for her students during the pandemic and parents are taking notice.
“She takes the time to keep parents updated through Class Dojo,” said Autumn Jones, a parent. “She has always been kind and understanding, and she makes my kindergartener enjoy going to school. I couldn’t have imagined having a better teacher for my little girl's first real school experience. We love her and she is wonderful all around. We appreciate her so much!”
Ms. Pendergraph joined the district in January and was only in the classroom for a few months before COVID-19 hit. Despite the unprecedented challenges for a new teacher, Ms. Pendergraph has adjusted and has found creative ways to reach the district’s youngest learners.
“Zooming with kindergarteners can be a little challenging sometimes, but I try to make it as fun and engaging as possible,” said Ms. Pendergraph. “I try to incorporate brain breaks throughout the Zooms where we play a ‘go find this item’ game, dance parties, or anything to get them up and moving! I learned very quickly that although they may be little, they know how to work the chat box, send reactions, and are very familiar with the unmute button. They are very fast learners!”
Ms. Pendergraph adds, “I strive to create an environment where it’s okay to try and make mistakes. I want them to feel safe when they are in my class and know how much they are loved!”
The efforts of our teachers and staff are truly heroic, and we are proud to have people like Ms. Pendergraph on our team to support our students!
