“I am Hamilton” spotlights the contributions of alumni, teachers, parents, students, support workers, and community members in providing opportunities for children in the classrooms of Hamilton County Schools. Better opportunities for children today mean a brighter future filled with possibilities for our graduates, their families, and the community.
Today, the “I am Hamilton” video feature spotlights Patrick Smiley, a custodian at East Ridge Elementary Schools. Smiley gets to school bright and early every day to get the building ready for the children and the teachers of East Ridge Elementary. He also brings along his smile and is ready to share a hug or a high-five with a child as he goes about his job each day.
“He knows every child by their first name,” said Pam Rogers, a teacher at East Ridge Elementary. “Mr. Smiley goes above and beyond every day not only for the teachers and school but for the children.”
Smiley creates jobs in the cafeteria and school for children which contributes to the success of the school because the little jobs help the children feel needed and important. “I want to make sure I keep the kids in comfort mode,” Smiley said. “I laugh and talk with them and show them that school is not a bad place to be and it makes me feel good when they come and talk to me.”
“He has a contagious smile,” said Kali O’Neal, a teacher at East Ridge. “Mr. Smiley will brighten your day with a good morning and a high five.”
