“I am Hamilton” spotlights the contributions of alumni, teachers, parents, students, support workers, and community members in providing opportunities for children in the classrooms of Hamilton County Schools. Better opportunities for children today mean a brighter future filled with possibilities for our graduates, their families, and the community.
Today, “I am Hamilton” spotlights Joe Barbeauld, a community volunteer who tutors children at North Hamilton County Elementary. He helps fourth and fifth-grade children with math. Barbeauld also works with a first-grade child to improve reading skills. He tutors children at North Hamilton Elementary four hours a day on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays so he has made a major commitment to the children of the community and the school.
“I guess the biggest thrill we get as tutors is when a kid has taken a test and lets me know they got a good grade on the test and they are so excited and want to share that excitement,” Barbeauld said. “It is those light bulb moments when you see that a kid gets it and maybe we are making a small difference in their lives.”
Barbeauld understands that it is all about spending the time to connect with children. “You try to encourage the kids and show the kids you care,” he added.
