Today’s #HCSHeroes Spotlight is Warisa Jarrett, an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher at Ooltewah High School. Mrs. Jarrett, who has taught in Hamilton County Schools for over 20 years, is being recognized for her positive impact on students learning the English language.
“Mrs. Jarrett is a wonderful teacher,” said James Mclemore, one of Mrs. Jarrett’s former students. “Mrs. Jarrett was my Special ED/CDC teacher. She taught me a lot and made an impact in my life. She works really hard to teach her students to be productive. She is truly an HCS Hero.”
Distance learning has been a challenge for our educators, but Mrs. Jarrett has remained committed to ensuring the success of her students.
“I was frustrated and nervous when we first moved to this new normal platform,” said Mrs. Jarrett. “With all the support from instructional coaches, especially the ongoing professional developments from the Office of Innovation, and the help of Michelle Bettis, who helped tremendously in walking me through the transitioning stage, I have gained confidence in teaching remotely. I can't call myself an expert yet, but I am learning new strategies for engaging students every week, as well as being resilient and continuing to teach both at home and in person students at the same time.”
Mrs. Jarrett adds, “I think, in general, my students have responded well. Chromebooks have been major tools in our lessons. In my opinion, we are on the right track in preparing them for the future.”
The efforts of our teachers and staff are truly heroic, and we are proud to have people like Mrs. Jarrett on our team to support our students!
