COURSE DESCRIPTION TEXTBOOKS
English 6 English 6 solidifies the foundation while increasing the complexity of text selection and tasks using the reading, speaking and listening, writing, and language standards. ELA standards are used with an integrated model, literacy standards spiraling, scaffolded in rigor as students are reading increasingly complex texts. The units included for the grade level are listed below: Unit 1:In this unit, students will explore the pros and cons of growing up and what the term means to them on a personal level. Culminating Performance-Based Assessment TaskPart 1 – Writing to Sources: Personal Narrative—Students will write a nonfiction narrative answering: In what way might childhood events present a series of challenges or triumphs? Part 2 – Speaking & Listening: Oral Presentation —Students use their nonfiction narrative as a foundation for a brief presentation. Unit 2:In this unit, students will read many examples about animals that have gone to extraordinary lengths to help humans in need. Culminating Performance-Based Assessment Task: Part 1 – Writing to Sources: Explanatory Essay—Students will write an explanatory essay answering the following question: How can animals and people help one another? Part 2 – Speaking & Listening: Oral Presentation—Students will use their explanatory essay as the foundation for an oral presentation.Unit 3:In this unit, students will read examples of modern technology and how it has helped and harmed society. Culminating Performance-Based Assessment Task: Part 1 – Writing to Sources: Argument—Students will write an argument answering the following question: Do we rely on technology too much? Part 2 – Speaking & Listening: Oral Presentation—After writing their argument, students will use it as the foundation for a brief oral presentation. Unit 4:In this unit, students will read texts and watch a video about the power of imagination. Culminating Performance-Based Assessment Task: Part 1 – Writing to Sources: Fictional Narrative—Students will write a answering the following question: How can imagination lead you to somewhere unexpected? Part 2 – Speaking & Listening: Oral Presentation—Students will use their journal entries to present a three- to five-minute oral presentation. Unit 5:In this unit, students will read many examples about exploration.Culminating Performance-Based Assessment Task: Part 1 – Writing to Sources: Argument—Students will write an argument addressing the following question: What fuels people’s desire to explore? Part 2 – Speaking & Listening: Oral Presentation—Students use their argument as the foundation for a brief oral presentation.
