Today’s #HCSHeroes Spotlight is Kelly Coffelt, principal at Hamilton County Virtual School (HCVS). With strong interest in virtual learning this year, Mrs. Coffelt has been tasked with expanding HCVS’ offerings to serve more students than ever before.

“Ever since I started enrollment for both of my sons, [Mrs. Coffelt] has gone out of her way to make sure they both get everything they need,” said Annery Pino, a parent. “She is absolutely amazing and dedicated to getting students to 150 percent.”

HCVS is a completely online option for students in grade K-12 that existed prior to the 2020-2021 school year. The COVID-19 pandemic drastically increased interest in a remote learning option for students, and enrollment grew from 35 to 750 during the month of July. Mrs. Coffelt led the effort to accommodate new students, especially with the transition to online learning.

“Our HCS leadership team did an excellent job of lining up devices, home WiFi, and staffing our school,” said Mrs. Coffelt. “Only a handful of students had experienced virtual schooling prior to this school year. It is a new experience for us all!”

Mrs. Coffelt adds that the success of HCVS this year is due in large part to her team. “I am so proud of my little staff of 30 teachers who come from all over the county to serve our students this year. Though we have never met in person, we have formed a strong, effective force to support students and families in this very difficult time.”

The efforts of our teachers and staff are truly heroic, and we are proud to have people like Mrs. Coffelt on our team to support our students!
