Big Ridge Elementary: Personalized Learning and Student LeadershipChattanooga, Tenn. - Big Ridge Elementary emphasizes personalized learning and student connections. The school’s initiatives are tailored to foster and nurture student belonging while prioritizing high-quality learning opportunities.

From student clubs and recognition programs to student mentoring and community partnerships, Big Ridge staff goes out of their way to ensure students are pushed to excellence and rewarded for their success. “My favorite place in the school is the cafeteria. I love being in one place and getting to interact with students outside of class,” said Principal Shelly Jackson. “Community is a key part of student success, and we work at Big Ridge to cultivate that for our students, both within our building and our larger school community.”

Carrie Shipley, the Big Ridge Student Support Coach, helps lead many of these initiatives at Big Ridge while supporting both students’ and staff’s well-being. “I always wanted to be a teacher, and I loved being a teacher, but I recognized there was so much more students needed. Being able to support students and advocate for their needs is very important to me, and while I’m doing that, I am also able to support teachers and advocate for them as well. I developed a passion for connection and classroom management, and this role allows me to live that mission.”

Golden Spatula: Good behavior doesn't go unnoticed—even in the lunchroom! Each week, one classroom is recognized for its cafeteria behavior and awarded the coveted Golden Spatula. The winning class is publicly announced on Friday morning, and the Golden Spatula is proudly displayed on classroom boards or door frames.

Top Dog of the Week: Designed to reinforce key behavioral expectations such as preparedness, accountability, thinking win-win, and safety, students who consistently meet these standards are celebrated as the "Top Dog of the Week," fostering a culture of responsibility and positive behavior.

The Bulldog Buddies Program: This mentorship pairs older and younger students to cultivate a sense of belonging and encourage academic discourse. Through guided activities and structured interactions provided by teachers, students build meaningful connections and promote a cohesive school community.

Student Clubs: Offering a variety of student clubs that cater to diverse interests topics, include Pokémon Club, Dog Lovers Club, and Blooket Club. Led by dedicated teachers and crossing grade bands, students explore shared interests and develop friendships.

Student of the Month: The Student of the Month program focuses on the “Leader in Me” habits that reinforce leadership skills among students. Teachers nominate students who exemplify specific leadership traits, and these students are celebrated with certificates, popcorn, and engaging activities.

All of these specially tailored programs allow staff at Big Ridge Elementary to create individualized student connections and space for academic excellence that pushes students to their full potential. Staff members play a critical role in fostering educational environments that allow students to embrace their unique interests and strengths.
