East Lake Elementary Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Vibrant Community EventsChattanooga, Tenn. - East Lake Elementary School highlights its pride in diversity and cultural appreciation with a series of events celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Through these initiatives, the school aimed to honor the rich cultural backgrounds of its predominantly Latino student body and foster a sense of community among students, families, and staff.

Anna Bernstein, the Family Partnership Specialist at East Lake Elementary, emphasized the school’s dedication to family engagement and cultural celebration. "In my short time here, I've been amazed by the strong community bonds and the eagerness of families to participate in school events," she shared. With a background in social work and Spanish, Bernstein is the perfect person to support and connect with the school’s community.

The celebrations kicked off with a vibrant Hispanic Heritage Family Night in September, where students, parents, and staff came together to showcase Hispanic culture. The night featured traditional recipes cooked by parents and staff, engaging activities led by grade-level teachers and departments, and colorful displays of cultural pride such as flag coloring and games. A highlight of the evening was a traditional Guatemalan dance performed by a family, complete with traditional attire.

East Lake Elementary hosts numerous family engagement nights throughout the school year, nearly one each month. These events are designed to strengthen community ties and allow parents to be actively involved in their children's education. The upcoming event in October will feature a literacy night paired with a festive "trunk or treat" activity.

East Lake Elementary’s commitment to cultural appreciation extends beyond special events. Each grade level and department maintains a bulletin board, with the third-grade teachers showcasing information on students’ family businesses, or "tiendas." The school’s motto, "Community, Caring, and Growth," is proudly spoken in Spanish every day during the announcements, reinforcing the school’s dedication to inclusivity.

The school also operates a house system where togetherness is emphasized, with activities and communications conducted in Spanish to further celebrate the school’s cultural diversity. East Lake Elementary serves as a beacon of cultural pride and community involvement.
