September 12, 2024 - In continued celebration of literacy awareness month, the HCS Book Bus is officially beginning visits to schools across the district.
Hamilton County Schools, with the support of the Governor’s Early Literacy Foundation, launched the HCS Book Bus. The HCS Book Bus aims to foster a love for reading among children by making literature more accessible. Equipped with a colorful and inviting exterior, the bus serves as a mobile library, spreading the joy of reading to communities across the county. This bus has already made a few appearances around the community to hand out free, age appropriate books and gifts, such as bookmarks and coloring books. The Bus also offers resources and tips on how to support literacy at home.
Victoria Hales, Coordinator of Gap Closure Programs, who oversees the HCS Book Bus initiative, provides more insight into the plans for the bus in the community, "We are excited to introduce the HCS Book Bus to our Pre-K classes this year, along with HCS programs such as Literacy First, Impact Fellows, and Summer REACH. During the visit, we will offer a literacy-focused activity, and every student will receive a book to take home.”
As the bus continues its journey, HCS plans to expand its reach, visiting schools, parks, and community centers. Upcoming events and schedules for the HCS Book Bus will be available on the Hamilton County Schools website in the coming weeks, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to participate in this wonderful initiative. By sparking curiosity and imagination through books, the HCS Book Bus is helping to build a brighter future for all children in the community.
