Hixson students and local elected officials turn the first shovels of dirt for the new school track.

Hixson High School recently broke ground to begin work on a new track for the school and a resurfacing of the football field.  Track team members, coaches, school administrators and community leaders joined to turn dirt on the beginning of the Hixson project.  Mayor Jim Coppinger, Commissioner Dr. Greg Martin, and other area leaders joined students to kick-off work on the project.

The Hixson project will include a new rubberized six-lane competition track to host competitions.  The football field will also be graded and raised two feet to solve drainage problems.  The field will have new goal posts, a new sprinkler system, and fencing around the field.  “The new facilities will allow us to host track meets here,” said Lee Sims, principal of Hixson High School. “We have not been able to do that for years.”  Baseline Sports Construction from Knoxville is the contractor on the Hixson project.

Hixson High School opened at the Middle Valley location for the 1966-67 school year.  The stadium and track were a community effort with funding from private contributions and the Chattanooga City school system some ten years later.  Members of the Hixson community focused on fitness frequently use the track creating a community gathering place.

“With the upgrade to the track, our students will have facilities for physical education classes and the track team will once again be in a position to host track meets,” Sims added. “The community will benefit from a safer walking area, and the improvements to the football field will add to the aesthetics of an already beautiful Hixson High School campus.”
