Leanne Weiler: A Journey Unfolds at East Ridge Elementary

Throughout the 2024-2025 school year, we will follow along with Leanne Weiler, a first-year Kindergarten teacher, highlighting her teaching journey along the way.

Chattanooga, TN— When Leanne Weiler, a first-year kindergarten teacher at East Ridge Elementary (ERES), began her career in August, she set out to build lasting relationships with her students, positively impact lives, and embrace the unexpected. Now, in late November, Weiler has found her rhythm as an educator and has become a trusted guide and friend to her kindergarten students.

Reflecting on the journey so far, Weiler is proud of the growth she and her students have made. "I'm finally in the groove of things, and the kids are in a routine," she said. "In kindergarten, you have to teach them how to go to school. I only had a few children who went to preschool, so most of my kids had never been in a school setting. They had to learn things like how to interact with others, sit on the carpet correctly, and follow directions all day." By November, those foundational lessons have taken root. "We're at a place now where they're remembering the routines. It really shows in how they engage with learning."

Weiler has received support and encouragement each step of the way. Nicole Galletta, new teacher coach, observes Weiler's classroom regularly and offers helpful tips and tricks. "When you walk into Leanne's classroom, you would think she has been teaching for 10 years," Galletta said. "Her students are engaged, learning, and loved. I absolutely love spending time with her and her students." Weiler has also been highly supported by her school community. Her mentor teacher, Emily Rossman, has become "more of a friend than just a mentor," Weiler said. Rossman always offers a smile, advice, or a helping hand. Rossman is proud of the progress Weiler has made this school year. “Her students are making so much growth academically and adjusting to being at school full time. She is holding her students to high expectations, and they are rising to the challenge,” Rossman said. “Her students absolutely adore her and love being in her class. I can't wait to continue to watch her grow as a teacher. I am so happy to have her as a teammate, and ERES is so lucky to have her impacting our students.”

Building bonds has been a cornerstone of Weiler’s approach to teaching. She has intentionally created a space where her students feel welcomed, valued, and encouraged. Weiler credits their morning meetings for establishing those bonds early on. “Every morning when they walk through the door, they either give me a high five or a hug. Then, when we start the morning meeting, I say, ‘Good morning, friends,' and they all say, ‘Good morning, Ms. Weiler,' in sync back, and it's so cute. I love it," she said. Their days can also begin with a "silly face or random question." These small interactions have a significant impact on their relationships. "At the beginning, I said I wanted my room to be somewhere kids wanted to come every day; I wanted it to be a home away from home. So when they're excited to see me and want to hold my hand, give me a hug, or tell me stories, I know I have accomplished building those relationships I wanted to have with them. It makes my heart happy to be that person for them."

This year has been filled with new experiences for both Weiler and her students– making every day an adventure. Whether it's the excitement of the first picture day or the milestone of counting to 100 for the first time, there is always something new to celebrate. One of the highlights so far was their field trip to Smith-Perry Berries Farm, where students had the chance to visit a pumpkin patch, learn about bees, enjoy a hay ride, and more. "They did so well; they were so intrigued and engaged. I was very impressed with them," Weiler said.

As the year progresses, Weiler continues to be inspired by the growth she witnesses in her students, both academically and socially. She looks forward to heading into the holiday season and watching the children enjoy holidays during school for the first time. Each day brings new adventures, opportunities to connect, and exciting ways to learn. We wish Weiler the best of luck and are excited to hear how the rest of her year unfolds!
