Since 1972, National School Nurse Week has been celebrated to show our school nurses how much they mean to the success of our schools and our children. May 6-12, each year is National School Nurse Week, and today is National School Nurse Appreciation Day. The week is celebrated annually in May in honor of the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.
The World Health Organization designated 2020 as the Year of the Nurse in recognition of the contributions they make, and the risks associated with nursing shortages. The choice was especially appropriate this year.
Five ways a school nurse benefits the school (From the National Association of School Nurses)
1. Attendance improves from school nurses promoting good health, disease prevention, and disease management.
2. Academic performance improves because children are in school regularly and arrive in class, ready to learn.
3. School nurses save time for teachers by addressing the health concerns of students.
4. General health of the staff at the school improves.
5. Accountability for schools to federal and state law is improved by school nurses.
“Thank you all for the great service you provide to Hamilton County students and staff,” said Sheryl Fletcher, manager of the School Health Program for Hamilton County Schools. “We appreciate your love for serving and the cooperative spirit you bring to this district. As we move forward through these uncertain times, please know that we are truly grateful to have you all!”
We take this opportunity to honor the vital role school nurses play in improving the lives of children in our schools. Thank you for what you do each day!
