“I am Hamilton” spotlights the contributions of alumni, teachers, parents, students, support workers, and community members in providing opportunities for children in the classrooms of Hamilton County Schools. Better opportunities for children today mean a brighter future filled with possibilities for our graduates, their families, and the community.
Today, the “I am Hamilton” video feature spotlights Gladys Winston, a community volunteer at Lakeside Academy. Mrs. Winston came to Lakeside a few years ago looking to volunteer and help at the school. She adopted Amanda McClain’s classroom and has become a part of the class family. She worked with the class in first grade and moved up when McClain looped up with her class to second grade. The current school year is Winston’s second year of working with second graders in McClain’s class.
“I love their smiles when I walk in, and they call my name, and they come to hug me,” Winston said. “That is part of what is keeping me doing what I do here at Lakeside.”
“Over the time she has been in my classroom, she has helped us write and publish a book, plant flowers for Mother’s Day, and reinforce class lessons with word and math games,” said Amanda McClain, a second-grade teacher at Lakeside Academy. “She pours her heart into the children in my class and is willing to do whatever is needed to help the children learn and grow.”
Winston even thinks of the class over holidays or when she goes on vacation and writes hand-written postcards to children in the class to let them know she is thinking of them.
“We all love Mrs. Winston and are so thankful for her caring and loving spirit,” added McClain.
