December 12, 2024 - At Orchard Knob Middle School, Mikele Suman is shaping the lives of her students by fostering an environment of learning, inclusion, and support. As an English as a New Language (ENL) teacher, Suman’s work helps students adapt to their new academic environment while embodying the true spirit of what it means to be a Yellow Jacket.
Her passion for learning inspired her journey into teaching. "I want to help others foster a lifelong love for learning," Suman says. Her decision to focus on ENL education was motivated by the pressing need for qualified educators. "Once I started learning more about ENL education and what supporting English Language Learners looked like, I felt it aligned most with my skills and values of inclusivity and equitable access to education for all students."
Working with English Language Learners (ELLs) brings unique rewards and challenges. Suman cherishes the moments when her students confidently showcase new phrases they've learned. "They repeat phrases from class to me in the hallway with the biggest smiles," she recalls.
However, teaching ENL comes with the added complexity of overcoming language barriers. "Middle school is hard for every student, but for some of our students, it's their first time in the United States or their first experience in an English-speaking school system," she explains. Her approach is grounded in kindness and patience because she focuses on each student's journey.
Despite the difficulties of balancing the demands of teaching and learning the nuances of her role, Suman credits her success to the support she receives. "The ENL department and fellow teachers at Orchard Knob help guide me through every challenge I face," she says. That encouragement and her students' enthusiasm keep her motivated on even the most challenging days. "I am reminded of how I impact students’ lives, even when it doesn't feel like it."
Beyond language, Suman's role as an ENL teacher extends to supporting students socially and emotionally. "There are students I don't share a language with, but we still communicate and find understanding through care," she says. For many of her students, Suman is a safe, welcoming presence during a pivotal time in their lives. "The most amazing thing has been realizing language doesn't have to define relationship development if you are intentional with how you care."
Suman says being a Yellow Jacket is about community. "Students and teachers rely on each other to achieve our goals. Our school culture highlights unity and developing relationships encouraging us to show up with our best efforts."
Suman's advice for teaching is practical and inspiring: "Stay excited and intentional with your energy. Growth isn't always linear, so don't compare your path to others. And remember, we are here to root for our students—they're the heart of what we do."
Suman's commitment to her students and her embodiment of school pride makes her a true asset to Orchard Knob Middle School, where she is shaping a brighter future for her students and community.
