Bobby Bundy, a senior at Chattanooga School for the Liberal Arts (CSLA), participated in the prestigious American Legion Boys State program this past summer. This selective educational program is known for teaching high school students about local, county, and state government. During the week-long program, participants receive government training and are introduced to elected officials from their home states.
The program was held at Tennessee Tech, where Bobby took part in various activities that helped him grow as a leader. Bobby reflected on his experience, “That was the furthest I’ve ever driven and the longest I’ve spent away from my family. That was a big leap for me, in terms of developing my independence.”
During the week-long program, Bobby and other students simulated the creation of a new 51st state in the U.S. While there, Bobby ran for leadership positions and worked closely with his peers. He said, “I was elected as a senator and learned so much. In just one week, I made more friends than I’ve ever had before.”
Bobby credits much of his success at Boys State to the lessons he learned over his decade attending CSLA. He shared, “Teachers have always encouraged me to become the best version of myself.” That encouragement has given him the self-confidence to step into leadership roles. Bobby also stated, “The high standards and expectations at CSLA helped me understand the lessons and activities we participated in at Boys State.”
As a member of CSLA’s first graduating class, Bobby feels proud of the person he has become and grateful for the opportunities his school has provided. “Being in the first graduating class really means something to me because I respect the school a lot. It’s allowed me to improve myself a lot, and I’m very grateful for that.” He believes that his experience at CSLA prepared him well for Boys State, and he is excited about what lies ahead in his future.
After graduating from CSLA, Bobby wants to take advantage of the free in-state tuition at Chattanooga State and then continue his education at a 4-year institution. He looks forward to applying the skills he has gained from CSLA and Boys State to work toward his goals.
