Principal of the Year- Greg Wilkey

Chattanooga, Tenn. - Hamilton County Schools proudly recognizes Greg Wilkey, Principal of East Side Elementary, as the 2023-2024 Principal of the Year. Wilkey's commitment to fostering a strong educational foundation for students shines through his leadership.

Wilkey was surprised by the recognition, saying, “I was very caught off guard when they told me I’d been selected, but I am extremely grateful for this award. I want to ensure our staff and students are proud of our school.”

Under his guidance, East Side has blossomed into a vibrant and nurturing environment where students feel empowered to learn and grow. Beyond academics, Wilkey prioritizes the well-being of his students, understanding that a holistic approach to education is essential for success. Wilkey's impact on East Side Elementary extends beyond the walls of the school building to staff, families, and the community.

"I want the kids, families, and staff to see me," Wilkey emphasizes, highlighting his open-door policy and unwavering dedication to being present and approachable.
When Wilkey transitioned from teaching to administration, he wanted to stay focused on providing a supportive environment for his staff. Wilkey extends the district's emphasis on personalization not just to students but to his staff as well, building relationships with teachers and forging connections. By creating a culture of trust, support, and open communication, Wilkey achieved a remarkable 100% staff retention rate for two consecutive years, a testament to his exceptional leadership style. Wilkey only saw this rate drop when he had a few teachers retire or move states.

Hamilton County Schools congratulates Greg Wilkey on this well-deserved honor and looks forward to his continued contributions to shaping a brighter future for all students. Congratulations to Principal Wilkey and the East Side community- in the words of Wilkey himself, “East Side is the Best Side.”
