Heather Barker and Scheloe Woodson

Today’s #HCSHeroes Spotlights are Heather Barker and Scheloe Woodson, 5th grade teachers at Bess T. Shepherd. The pair were nominated because of their willingness to go the extra mile to support their students.

“They have gone above and beyond to work with the students and have done so well with all the transitions,” said Tiffany Wiltshire, a parent. “The communication has been phenomenal. They work extra hours for students when they don't understand. They still keep high expectations of the students yet also are kind and give grace.”

Ms. Wiltshire adds, “My daughter has flourished during this year despite the changes and I attribute that to these two ladies!”

Mrs. Barker is a math and science teacher, and Mrs. Woodson teaches literacy and social studies. They partner together to accomplish teaching HCS at Home students for part of the day and in class students for the other half.

Like all educators, COVID-19 has presented obstacles for Mrs. Barker and Mrs. Woodson as they navigate changes inside and outside of the classroom. “We still try to have fun while learning,” said Mrs. Barker. “When I see that my students may be struggling with some of the changes, I let them know I am here to support them and help them in their education. I think being supportive and caring, while educating at the same time, is the most important part of my job right now.”

Despite the challenges, the duo has relied on teamwork to keep moving forward. “I've been encouraged by the determination of my fellow teachers and administrators to ensure the best possible learning experience for our students,” said Mrs. Woodson. “It is a privilege to help these young people learn and grow in character. I am so thankful to be a teacher!”

The efforts of our teachers and staff are truly heroic, and we are proud to have people like Mrs. Barker and Mrs. Woodson on our team to support our students!
