With another school year ending and summer here, it is time to pick up your favorite book and celebrate reading all summer long. The librarians of Hamilton County Schools have partnered with the Chattanooga Public Library to produce a fun-filled summer reading video to encourage students to keep reading.

“Reading in the summer helps build on the skills obtained during the school year so that learning continues into the next grade year,” said Corinne Hill, executive director of the Chattanooga Public Library, “We need the support and encouragement of families to ensure that all of our children become excellent readers. Happy Reading!”

Throughout the school year, librarians across the district have submitted Hamilton Book of the Week nominations, and to kick off a strong summer of reading, we have compiled a list of five must reads for #HCSReads 2020 summer of reading.

1. Shouting at the Rain by Lynda Mullaly Hunt

2. Warcross by Marie Lu

3. The Wild Robot by Peter Brown

4. Heartache and Other Natural Shocks by Glenda Leznoff

5. Far From the Tree by Robin Benway

Hamilton Book of the Week seeks to move Hamilton County Schools closer to district goals found in the Future Ready 2023 action plan.  We hope to encourage kids to read more books for fun by sharing books popular at area schools.

Goals more students reading will address include:

  • Reading improvement will increase the number of students on-track or mastering English language arts
  • Improve the district ACT score to a district average of 21
  • Reach the target goal of a 90 percent graduation rate by 2023
