To celebrate the Class of 2020, Senior Video Features for Hamilton County Schools will highlight a senior from each learning community in May. The spotlight today is on Pooja Karunanithi, a senior at Ooltewah High School in the Harrison Bay Learning Community.
Karunanithi was born in Chattanooga. Her parents came to the United States from India so she also enjoys her rich Indian culture and it is a big part of her life. She lost her father in a swimming accident last summer when he was caught in a rip-tide in Florida while on vacation. Pooja’s bond with her friends and teachers helped her to make it through a very difficult time in her life.
“I feel like I have a special bond with my teachers and my friends now,” Karunanithi said. “The biggest thing is to accept all of the support you get. I am glad they were there for me.”
Pooja’s teachers see a very hard-working, dedicated student who is focused on what is best for her future. “Pooja is always forward thinking to determine what is going to be the best class or project that will help her reach career goals,” said Erica Hitchcox, teacher at Ooltewah High School. “She always goes above and beyond to get the very best from her educational journey.”
“All of my teachers have inspired me to be a better person,” said Karunanithi. She wants to be an engineer after completing her education. Pooja has applied at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the University of Alabama at Huntsville to study engineering.
