The spotlight today is on Abdullah Al Shaer, a senior at Brainerd High School in the Opportunity Zone Learning Community.

Al Shaer came to Hamilton County and Brainerd High School from Saudi Arabia. His journey to the United States to experience high school was through the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and provides scholarships for secondary school students to spend one academic year in the United States.

“Being away from my family has been difficult but they understand that this will be important for my future,” said Al Shaer. “I have been to eight different schools in my life so believe me when I say Brainerd High School is an outstanding school.”

Al Shaer plans to return to America to attend college at the University of Charleston and double major in political science and international business, and minor in communications.
