I Am Hamilton Video Feature - Ron Nance, English teacher and coach at Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences
Today, the “I am Hamilton” video feature spotlights Ron Nance, a high school English teacher and rock climbing coach at Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences. Nance is in his eighteenth year of teaching English and he is energized by his recent role as coach of students in the rock climbing club at the school. The club started in just the high school grades but has now expanded to the middle school grades at Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences.
“I am Hamilton” spotlights the contributions of alumni, teachers, parents, students, support workers, and community members in providing opportunities for children in the classrooms of Hamilton County Schools. Better opportunities for children today mean a brighter future filled with possibilities for our graduates, their families, and the community.
“Some of the things I treasure the most are when I see kids that struggled when they went through school and I see them later in life and they are successful,” said Nance. “Those are moments that I treasure for sure.”
Nance added the coaching duties for the rock climbing club when Jim Boles, the school principal, challenged faculty to develop clubs that would get students involved outside of the classroom. Nance had been a rock climbing enthusiast and decided to give it a try to see if the teens would respond.
“In rock climbing you have to be vulnerable in front of other people,” said Nance. “It is also empowering when you can face a challenge and realize you can overcome it.”
“Coach Nance, I kind of like to refer to him as a mentor with climbing,” said Chris Boles, a student at Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences and a member of the school’s climbing team. “He is the greatest coach ever!”
